Doc Swinson’s Exploratory Cask Reefer Madness Straight Rye Finished in Rum & Ex-peated Scotch Casks

Doc Swinson’s Exploratory Cask Reefer Madness Straight Rye Finished in Rum & Ex-peated Scotch Casks Review

FINISHING AND MATURATION:  Solera Method Finished Rye spent an additional 2 years in the rum cask solera (4 rum types), then 3.5 months in ex-peated Scotch quarter

Proof: 106.4°

Distilled by MGP in Lawrenceburg, IN

Blend of 2 mashbills:

95% rye, 5% malted barley

51% rye, 45% corn, 4% malted barley

Nose 👃: Caramel.  Burnt brown sugar. Rye bread. Orange zest.

Palate 👅: Rye bread. Leather.  Ripe banana. Orange zest. Smoked bacon. Medium viscosity mouthfeel. Dry feel.

Finish 🏁: Rye bread. Leather. Orange zest. Black cherry.  Long in length.  Dry.

Overall thoughts?  Oh my… there’s a lot of activity here… and it’s all good!  If I was drawing up a finish, I don’t think I’d ever have thought to mix peat & rum… yet here we are… and it’s delicious!  I fully appreciate that Doc Swinson’s pushes the envelope… and this one is a winner.
